Extraction, Evaporation & Drying

By SPX Corporation

SPX is a world leader in extraction, evaporation and drying technologies. Our flow technologies and systems are used to produce a wide variety of food and beverages.

Our e&e extraction plants are used for the recovery of natural extracts, essential oils, oleoresins, colorings, aromas and extractive substances. Our extraction technologies are designed for multiple purposes, and can be used to produce a number of different products from a single system.

Freeze Drying

SPX's e&e freeze drying plants are used for drying frozen granulates or liquid concentrates; they are used for drying products for the food and pharmaceutical industry. Freeze drying applications cover liquids and solids with the complete process carried out in a single unit.

For solids freeze drying, SPX are able to offer one of the largest vacuum belt dryer available in the market place - delivering a high capacity, exceptionally gentle drying process. Design and fabrication is supplied in accordance with GMP, FDA and 3A standards, ensuring quality and hygiene are to the highest standards.

Process steps and utilities of e&e freeze Drying Plants:

  • Foaming
  • Freezing
  • Granulation
  • Sieving
  • Sublimation inside the belt dryer
  • Ice condensation
  • Heating system
  • High-vacuum technology

e&e Vacuum Belt Drying Plants

e&e vacuum belt drying plants are designed for the continuous charging of liquid or solid products. Vacuum belt drying can be regarded as one of the most economical and gentle drying methods. Due to the vacuum, very low water evaporation temperatures can be achieved. Aroma, product colour and bulk density can specifically be influenced by the process.

Advantages of using e&e Vacuum Dryers:

  • Short drying time
  • Minimal loss of aroma
  • Little loss of product
  • No oxidation of product
  • No mechanical stress
  • Low product temperatures
  • Low energy consumption
  • Completely closed system
  • No pollution of environment
  • Controllable maillard reaction

Evaporation Systems

Evaporation is used to separate a liquid from a solid. Common applications include: milk, juice, purees, meat and vegetable broths, coffee extract, sugar, corn syrup, de-alcoholised beer, baby food, whey, coffee, ingredients, flavours, starch and sweeteners, plant-based proteins, and animal proteins.

APV and Anhydro evaporators from SPX are available in the following designs:

  • Rising/falling plate evaporator film
  • Flexibility - vary design/capacity by changing plate arrangements
  • Expandability - by adding plates or additional effects
  • Space savings - low headroom requirement
  • Low installation cost - no special foundation needed
  • Process assurance - rental units available for trials
  • Forced circulation evaporator
  • Flash evaporators
  • Tubular falling film evaporator
    • MVR heated
    • TVR heated
    • Direct steam heated
  • Sweetened condensed milk 3-stage flash coolers
  • Concentrate flash cooler

Benefits of SPX evaporators include:

  • Energy savings - designs reuse heat captured from concentration process
  • Gentle product handling:
    • Vacuum evaporation lowers boiling temperatures
    • Low temperature difference increase product quality

Drying Systems

SPX offers a selection of Anhydro standard dryers as well as custom made dryers for specific products and capacities. Continuous product development and innovative designs ensures the drying systems are energy efficient and flexible so a variety of products with different powder functionalities can be produced on the same drying plant.
