New APV Combi UHT Pilot Plant from SPX provides an efficient tool for pilot trials and product development

Published 07 March 2013 | By SPX Corporation

The APV Combi UHT Pilot Plant provides the flexibility to combine and compare heat treatment technologies for the production of high quality food within high-level hygiene standards. It provides flexibility to explore which heat treatment process delivers better results for new food product lines. From milk to high viscosity desserts and baby foods – this complete installation provides everything needed to compare and contrast different process conditions.

A flexible opportunity to combine and compare different heat treatment technologies

The plant delivers great flexibility by incorporating four heat treatment technologies within direct heating from tubular and platesystems and direct heating from steam infusion and steam injection systems. It provides the capability to easily combine and select from this wide range of processes to trial new products.

SPX has extensive experience in the heat treatment of food and beverage products. This extremely sophisticated plant uses the full range of its high performing UHT processes. Each system within the pilot plant is designed to offer some of the best efficiencies and preservation of food qualities that particular technology offers.

The Combi UHT Pilot Plant gives all of the options needed to run effective product trials to make attractive results for colour, taste, texture, chemical and nutritional characteristics. Along with an aseptic homogenizer, the following heat treatment systems are available within the plant:

  • Standard Infusion- an ultra-fast, gentle process with high efficiency and minimal chemical change to the product.
  • Instant Infusion - a flexible and gentle process for inactivation of bacteria and spores in high viscosity products.
  • InfusionPlus - a high temperature process with extremely short holding time designed to mimic the taste results of a pasteurised product.
  • Injection - direct steam injection
  • Tubular and Plate UHT - indirect heating with efficient heat recovery

The control system continues the flexibility of this plant with a touch screen interface enabling the operator to quickly and easily select and control the various sections of the plant. All data is collected and recorded by the system so that vital process parameters
may be retrieved and analysed to assess trials.

The APV Combi UHT Pilot Plant is an effective selection system to optimise sterilised food characteristics and produce attractive product results. It draws from the extensive expertise SPX has in the food and beverage markets. It is built to the highest hygienic
standards, and readily meets the most stringent requirements of authorities such as the FDA.

The flexible capacity of the plant from 500 up to 1000 l/h will perfectly mimic a commercial size UHT installation. This capability ensures easy and accurate scale-up to full production systems - with complete confidence in the quality and consistency of the final product.
