Platinum Sponsors of the Formula Student Germany Project: COPA-DATA and Prozesstechnik Kropf help promote young talent

Published 15 July 2013 | By COPA-DATA

COPA-DATA GmbH and Prozesstechnik Kropf GmbH are supporting Hof University of Applied Sciences in Germany as platinum sponsors of their entry into "Formula Student Germany" (FSG), an international construction competition for students that has been organized by the VDI Verein Deutscher Ingenieure e.V. (Association of German Engineers) since 2006.

The objective of the competition is to design and build a single-seater race car and compete with this against teams from around the world. The student teams of Formula Student Germany who are taking part should, in addition to what they have learnt on their course, also gain practical experience and knowledge and look in detail at the design, building and all economic and commercial aspects in relation to automotive construction.

Getting practical knowledge

formula student germanyThe students taking part in this competition create the prototype of a vehicle, which should most of all have very good acceleration, good braking abilities, simple handling as well as being cost-effective and reliable. Aesthetics, comfort and the use of series-production parts or even pre-production products are additional factors that should make the vehicle stand out.

"Formula Student Germany promotes commitment, teamwork and the creativity of the students taking part and gives them the possibility to gain their first practical experience for subsequent employment as engineers. We are looking forward to being able to support this project," explains Philipp Schmidt, Partner Account Manager and Education Representative at COPA-DATA GmbH in Germany.

Commitment to the young engineering talent pool

COPA-DATA and Prozesstechnik Kropf are, with their support for the "Formula Student Germany" project, supporting Hof University of Applied Sciences, which is entering as "HofSpannung Motorsport e.V." - a team that currently consists of 35 students from different study courses (business administration, media, IT and engineering). In doing so, the team from Hof University of Applied Sciences is focusing on "Green Tech", i.e. environmentally-friendly technology, electric drives, environmentally-friendly materials and batteries with renewable energy.

COPA-DATA is providing the students with the HMI/SCADA software zenon to visualize the most important vehicle information. With zenon, the team from Hof University of Applied Sciences is visualizing the speeds, drivetrain power, temperature regulation of the motor, the tires and the batteries, as well as monitoring the electricity (current and voltage) of the vehicle. COPA-DATA Expert Partner Prozesstechnik Kropf is providing on-site support for Formula Student Germany, assisting the project and supporting the students by liaising closely with them to exchange information.

"The practical implementation of the theoretical knowledge is very important for us as young engineers. The cooperation with commercial companies is therefore essential and promotes not just the current exchange of knowledge but also future cooperation. We would therefore like to thank our sponsors and supporters for their commitment," said Thorsten Malzer, Public Relations Manager for HofSpannung Motorsport e.V.

Competence wins

From July 30, 2013 to August 4, 2013 115 teams comprising of around 2,500 students from 24 countries will lap the German Hockenheimring with their self-built racing cars; there are 40 teams competing with an electric motor for the first time.

However, it is not the final result of the race that is decisive. A jury comprising of specialists from the automotive, motorsport and supplier industry will evaluate the design of the racing car, as well as the business plan and the costs incurred. The team with the best overall package of design and racing performance, financial planning and sales arguments will be named as the winner of the competition.
