Starbucks to launch single-origin premium coffees in US

Starbucks will introduce a line of single-origin coffees, called Starbucks Reserve, which will be available in limited proportions and while supplies last in select stores in the US this fall.

Galapagos San Cristobal, the first offering in the line-up originated on San Cristobal, located within the Galapagos Islands. Galapagos San Cristobal is a medium-bodied coffee that contains hints of green herbs balanced by soft cocoa and spice.

 

In addition to Galapagos San Cristobal, other coffees in Starbucks Reserve portfolio will come in whole bean half-pound packages, and in only certain markets they will be brewed by the cup through either the Clover brewing machine or Pour Over Brewing method and sold.

 

Currently, Starbucks has placed Clover brewing machines in around 60 stores in the US, and will continue to increase the number of these machines in more Starbucks stores by the end of 2010.

 

Starbucks Reserve can be found in stores within metropolitan markets including New York City; San Francisco Bay Area; Los Angeles; Washington DC; Boston; Seattle; Portland, Oregon; Chicago; Dallas; Philadelphia; Atlanta; and Miami.

 

Starbucks senior vice president of coffee and global procurement Dub Hay said that only 3% of all the coffee grown around the world is good enough to make it into a bag of Starbucks Coffee, and Starbucks Reserve represents the company's heritage as a purveyor of the world’s finest coffees.

 

Galapagos San Cristobal will be available for sale starting from 31 August 2010 as whole bean or hand-crafted by the cup in select markets, while supplies last.

 

The whole bean packages will sell at the suggested retail price starting at $12.50 for a half-pound and $2.95 for a 12fl oz cup of Galapagos San Cristobal brewed by the cup.
