Norland International unveils oxo-biodegradable cap for 5-gallon water bottles

DBR Staff Writer Published 30 August 2010

Norland International, a Nebraska-based designer and manufacturer of equipment for bottled water industry, has launched a new oxo-biodegradable cap for 5-gallon water bottles.

The company said that these LDPE (low density polyethelene) caps, sold under the Earth Cap trade name, are FDA-compliant and are fully recyclable.

Earth Caps contain an additive, which is blended using a mixing and drying system, that hastens the degradation process.

Norland further claims that there is no contamination with the plastics recycling stream and industrial composting facilities are also not required.

This injection molded Earth Cap also comes with a biodegradable non-adhesive tamper-evident label and 2mm foam seal.

These oxo-biodegradable caps have a shelf life of two years, and perform the same as current types, according to Norland.

Norland International vice president Sam Noordhoff said that this is a significant milestone in meeting the sustainability needs of water bottlers across the world.

“This is an environmentally-friendly option that goes far beyond lightweighting and other recycling strategies, offering a truly effective means of reducing the environmental impact of these plastic products,” Noordhoff said.

The company manufactures these 55-mm caps that come in standard colors such as earth green, blue, and natural, and are available in the US and Far East/Pacific.

Norland International offers a full line of complete bottling systems for small bottles 16.9oz/ 500 ml and large-bottle 5-gallon/19 L production.

It also offers commercial water distillers, blow molders for PET bottles, pretreatment and ozone generating systems, cappers, labelers, case packers, and shrink-wrapping equipment.
