DBR Staff Writer Published 19 July 2010

Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines (DC&E), a part of international wines and spirits company, Diageo, has disposed of its Barton & Guestier Bordeaux business to Castel Freres, a French wine company.

The sale includes brands, inventory and land, including Chateau Magnol. The terms of the transaction were not revealed.

Diageo said that it was taking a full review of its US wines business to concentrate its on core strategic brands like Beaulieu Vineyard wines, Sterling Vineyards, Chalone, Acacia, Rosenblum Cellars and Provenance.

Other brands in the DC&E's portfolio include Sterling Vintner's Collection, Edna Valley Vineyard and the French wines of Barton & Guestier.

DC&E noted that, in addition to its US wine brands, it will continue to import many wines to the US from France and other countries, and remains committed to its current portfolio of French wines from Burgundy and Alsace.

Sandra LeDrew, president of sales & marketing for DC&E, said: DC&E remains committed to our French Agency business and our dedicated Diageo distributor network across the country will continue to handle these wines as we have done with pride and success for many years.

In markets outside the US, Diageo Wines Europe will continue to grow its involvement in Bordeaux wines through the separate but complementary businesses, Vignobles Internationaux (Visa) and Justerini & Brooks.

Bordeaux-based Visa will continue to market and commercialize Bordeaux wines, focusing on key merchants and importers in Europe and Asia.

Justerini & Brooks, a London-based merchant, continues to develop its sales of Bordeaux wines within its fine wine portfolio with private individuals and premium hotels and restaurants, including a continuing commitment to en primeur.

DC&E produces and markets wines from around the globe including Napa Valley, Sonoma, the California Central Coast, Washington, France, New Zealand and Australia. It is also an importer of classified Bordeaux and Burgundy estate-bottled wines and FE Trimbach.
