Dewar's revamps packaging for scotch whiskey range

DBR Staff Writer Published 01 September 2010

Dewar’s, an international Scotch whiskey brand, has launched a new packaging design for its blended Scotch whiskey portfolio.

The Scotland-based international company said that the new packaging, designed by New York based Spring Design Partners and made by glassmaker O-I in Scotland, gives its Dewar’s range of whiskeys a unified brand image.

Dewar's has first released bottles for White Label and 12 Years Old, and lined up 15 and 18 Years for launch in future.

The new design features a ‘wave’ in the bottle, which cuts through the paper pressure sensitive label to create a window onto the whiskey inside.

While the basic shape of the containers stays the same, the bottles are designed to share critical dimensions, which minimized change part costs on bottle handlers and labeling machinery, Dewar's said.

The low volume models were chucked, reducing the range from around 26 to 20 containers.

Dewar’s Whiskey senior global category director Iain Kennedy said that Dewar’s well-rounded taste which was the inspiration for our new packaging design.

O-I sales manager in Scotland Scott Gibb said that the company trialled the various bottles several times to determine risk areas and visual imperfections, for which they had very tight tolerances.

“We worked very closely with the client from the development of the CAD drawings through sampling and manufacture so we had a good understanding of what to expect,” Gibb said.

“The result is excellent packaging with high visual quality and an impact that can only be achieved in glass.”

Dewar’s project manager David Hudson said the company has an excellent working relationship with O-I and speak with them on a daily basis.

“This was extremely important to us so we could align bottle availability with our other partners in engineering and production and ensure our machine part specialists were on-site for initial set up and line commissioning,” Hudson said.

Dewar’s portfolio of premium & super premium whiskeys include Dewar’s 12 Years Old, Dewar’s 18 Years Old & the exclusive Dewar’s Signature.

These whiskies are said to be crafted using the Dewar’s double-ageing process.
