New drinks review: feeling functional

Published:26-August-2005

It would appear consumers like their drinks to do more than merely quench thirst. A scan of drinks launches recorded by Productscan Online this month shows that there are numerous products that claim to provide an energy boost or a vitamin hit. Even beer has been produced to appeal to the health market, with Anheuser-Busch launching caffeine and ginseng enhanced B-to-the-E in the UK...

For those feeling under the weather and in need of a vitamin boost, Brain Twist has introduced Defense Effervescent Supplement. Although there are many vitamin and energy drinks on the US market, this one differs from the mainstream in its innovative packaging. The manufacturer claims that vitamins are not stable in liquid products. It therefore uses FreshCan technology to allow the vitamins to dissolve only when the tab to the can is pulled. The drink contains vitamins A, B2, C and E, as well as zinc, calcium and magnesium, which Brain Twist says may help prevent colds and boost the immune system.

Meanwhile, for consumers who want an energy boost that will provide a bigger hit than a cup of coffee, US-based PR Performance has launched Source Burn2, which it claims contains 48% more caffeine than its rivals, Red Bull and SoBe Adrenalin. The energy drink contains a substantial 118mg of caffeine, sourced from guarana and pure caffeine, as well as other "high-energy" supplements like taurine and ginseng. The manufacturer doesn't recommend taking the drink during sporting activities as it is not a hydrator, but rather suggests it should be consumed prior to working out as an energy booster.

For many people, working out may be too much of a chore, even if they wish to lose weight. Now Canadian consumers are being offered an alternative, with the Hollywood 24-Hour Miracle Diet Drink. The manufacturer, Sunset Health Products Consumers, states that the vitamin- and mineral-enriched tonic can help people lose up to five pounds in only a day. Consumers will have to be strict to persevere with this though, as the manufacturers recommend fasting for 24 hours while taking the drink.

Meanwhile, Productscan has found that even beer can have added health benefits. Anheuser-Busch has launched B-to-the-E Beer (BE for short) in the UK, a premium-strength beer enhanced with caffeine and ginseng, therefore straddling both the beer and health drink markets. The beer is said to taste of blackberry, raspberry and cherry, and to have a lightly sweet and tart taste. The manufacturers claim the drink will appeal to both men and women - presumably those consumers who don't care for the taste of beer!

Another beer recorded by Productscan also mixes beer with another flavor, this time in the German market. Schwarzbier-Cola-Mix Getrank blends beer with cola, which the manufacturer claims makes it ideal for day or night consumption. Like BE Beer, this could also be a move towards getting more women to drink beer, by masking the taste with another flavor.

Over in New Zealand, Coca-Cola Amatil has been testing a new flavored cola drink on its antipodean consumers, to see if it could prove as popular as its lemon, vanilla and lime varieties of Coke. If new Raspberry Coke catches on in New Zealand, expect to see the flavor launched across other markets in the coming months. At the rate Coca-Cola is going, the company will soon have a whole fruit bowl of coke flavors to offer its customers!
